Safety, Health, Environment & Quality (SHEQ)
Looking after the wellbeing of our people; our customers; the public and the environment is our absolute priority. It is our aim to leave the communities where we work in a better condition than we found them whilst also delivering an outstanding service.
Our efforts to be inclusive rather than exclusive, proactive rather than reactive, practical rather than theoretical, are having an impact on people’s attitudes to safety, health and the environment. The frequency and the severity of incidents are reducing all the time and at the end of last year had fallen to 0.31 accidents for every 100,000 hours worked. This improvement has been a factor in our being awarded International Awards by the British Safety Council (BSC) in all five of our operational Regions as well as for Rok as a whole. Though welcome, these accolades have not made us complacent and we are now working with the BSC to ensure we pass its Five Star Audit by 2010. To date we have achieved ‘Three Star status in three of our five regions and two ‘Four Stars’ in the others.
'One accident is one too many and with this ringing in our ears we will ensure everyone takes responsibility for making sure we all go home safe and well each day’, Shaun Davis, Group Safety, Health, Environment & Quality Director.
In order to achieve our ultimate goal of no accidents, all regions are required to put together their own long-term plans in the form of a ‘Commitment Statement' based on the Group Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) strategy and objectives & targets. These statements are communicated widely and subject to regular review at the quarterly Group SHE performance review meetings. Outcomes of these meetings are published on the company intranet ‘Roknet' to ensure everyone is kept up to date on progress.
The SHEQ team is also responsible for assuring our customers that we have the processes in place – and that we use them - to consistently produce work of a high standard. To this end we have a number of Internal Auditors from each region reporting on our performance each month as we work towards maintaining and exceeding our ISO 9001 accreditation.
Our ideas for keeping people safe, reducing the environmental impact of our activities and improving standards can be seen in greater detail in our Annual Report located in the Investor Relations section of this website.
