Sharp increase in claims
Rok received 78% more claims in one day during the cold spell.
Recent freezing weather conditions brought a flood of calls to Rok Insurance Services, the majority of them as a result of escape of water.
Kathy Barnes, Rok Insurance Services Director, said: “Claim numbers increased dramatically as the snow and ice started to thaw. The numbers are far in excess of anticipated figures for this time of year. Most of the claims relate to the melting snow finding cracks in buildings and flooding the properties or the weight of snow causing roofs to collapse.”
Kathy added: “As always, our priority will be to ensure that we provide householders and local businesses with every assistance as claim numbers rise. Using our directly employed technicians and plumbing, heating and electrical teams, we are able to provide emergency assistance where and when required.”
Significant improvements in insulation levels, house design and, most importantly, public awareness has generally reduced the risk of damage to property from burst pipes but the recent spell of unusually severe weather is likely to see claim numbers for Escape of Water exceed last year’s figures.
Rok has joined forces with Fortis and the British Insurance Brokers’ Association to provide information for homes and businesses to help reduce the chances of major disruption caused by weather.
