One of our Rok Volunteers who takes advantage of his extra day is procurement co-ordinator, Peter Sutton, who has been chairman of the Redditch and Bromsgrove branch of Diabetes UK for 20 years.

He writes: “I’ve lived with diabetes all my life, having developed the Type 1 form of the condition as a child. Over the years I had received cards through my door about a local support group, and as my age started to creep up, I wanted to make sure I was up-to-date on the latest treatments in my area.”

Peter went along and never looked back. The group is entirely funded by voluntary donations, so a lot of his free time goes into raising funds, through social events and charity tin raffles in local supermarkets. The money is used to fund activities for young people in the local area who suffer with diabetes.

“Playing my part in supporting others going through the same thing that I have, especially in the case of children and young people, is so rewarding,” says Peter.

The highlight of the year is a special Christmas party, for local children and their siblings. Around 60 children with diabetes attend each year, aged from 3-10 years old.
