Rok's Chosen Charities
Rok’s offices have a knack of having fun as teams and raising large sums of money for good causes in the process. As well as participating in the usual activities for the better known national charities, they all have their own pet local causes that they support through a variety of sponsored events or community challenges. Being builders, our
emphasis is often on doing as opposed to just giving away cash.
Since Rok was launched in 2001, it has also supported several charities at national level. The first of these was the rugby’s Wooden Spoon charity, which raises money to support children or young people who are disadvantaged either socially, physically, or mentally. With a series of golf days across the country, Rok raised thousands of pounds for Wooden Spoon and the aspect we liked most was the distribution of the money back to the communities that helped generate it.
In 2007, Rok agreed to become a corporate supporter of the Prostate Cancer Charity of which our chief executive is a member. With the backing of our employees’ representatives, The Citizen’s Forum, Rok organised a Rok Real Man five-a-side football tournament across the UK in 2008 which netted an amazing £40,000 to help the charity with its goals of providing support and information and funding research.
Explaining why we chose this charity, our safety, health and environment director, Shaun Davis, says: “In the construction industry there is a huge amount of importance placed, quite rightly, on being aware of the dangers of working on site. However, we feel we also have a responsibility to support health campaigns that affect our workforce, which is predominantly. Early detection of the disease could save lives and we know men tend to be less good at thinking about their own health. It is also important the message is spread to female employees so that they are also aware of the risks, signs and symptoms and can encourage their male partners, friends and family members to have regular health checks.”
